Dreams Calling part 1 by Kaie

Kaie woke from her dreams with the smell of the sea still fresh in her memory. For four nights now she
dreamed of the horses and their mysterious canyon, she felt the pounding of their hooves vibrating in her
heart and woke to the lingering call of their neighs.

She stumbled outside and leaned against the side of her small hut, letting the cool night air bring goose
bumps to her sweat covered skin. The first night she dreamed of them, she woke and hurried to the
stables, thinking she was needed there. None of the horses there would explain the call to her, yet they
heard it as well. Soon. That is all they told her. Soon you will answer the call.

Settling into the shadows Kaie stood watching the moon and listening to the sounds of the night. She
knew the call was growing stronger and she didn't fear it. She would join the wild white horses that came
from the sea soon, she would answer their call and wait no more while they ran.

~~~~~~~~~~
Wild white horses are on the run
Along the shoreline flashing sea foam and sun
My brothers, my dear friends, and my loved ones
Hooves pound the wet sand as I stay here alone.
They skim across the beach like the pelican flies
And the spirit within me helplessly tries
But like a worn statue I stand where I belong
Although I yearn to follow them for ever so long
A storm wind rushing from out of the sky
Wild white ghost horses are passing me by
Joyous neighing so loud it swallows my cries
Then like a cloud over the ocean the dream thunder dies.
Wild white ghost horses carry me home
Let me run beside you on hidden roads that you roam
And when I grow too weak to stand
Grab onto your manes and fly over the land.
They're going to that canyon shrouded in mist
The home of the heart where we all once lived first
But I'm chained to the ground like an ancient withered tree
I see only in dreams how it feels to be free.
Blinded with pain I can barely see
Still I touch the ones who depend on me
And She who formed us all has decided my fate
While the horses are running I must stay here and wait.
Wild white ghost horses carry me home
Let me run beside you on hidden roads that you roam
And when I grow too weak to stand
Grab onto your manes and fly over the land.
Dreams Calling,  part 2  by Kaie
Kaie stood in the chilled morning air and watched the shadows of the woods closely.  Although she slept
well thanks to Lyea’s unknown help, the dreams still haunted her, even in the waking hours.  Kaie was
watching for something, she knew that the call would have be answered soon now, and waited for the
sign.
She considered asking Killian to help her understand the dreams; Kaie didn’t have any experience with
such things.  Something told her this was for her alone.  She felt the thrill of danger and excitement
waiting just out of her reach.  She grew more restless each day she waited.  For now, she would keep it to
herself, she knew from experience how those that cared about her tried to protect her from danger and
keep her safe, but this adventure would not be denied.
Glancing back toward the light away from the shadows, she started as she realized Caitlin was nearby,
watching her closely in the morning sunlight with that familiar scowl she wore often now while watching
her.  With a sigh, she hurried towards the stables to greet the horses, once again missing the time she
spent learning from Caitlin and hoping her restless urge to find adventure was not too easily read in her
face.
Dreams Calling, part 3:  Caitlin's Dilemma
By Caitlin
8/12/2004
Caitlin worried the piece of hay between her teeth while she kept near constant vigil over Kaie.   The tall
trader felt a pang of pain when she saw what seemed like hate in Kaie's face when their eyes met.  Caitlin
was sure Kaie hated her for not rescuing her in time from the rapists, thus allowing unspeakable things to
be done to her.  The warrior wasn't well versed in the ways of the Faery folk, or the Great Mother Oak,
and though she herself found immense healing once under their tutelage, she couldn't imagine Kaie as
totally free from scars, especially emotional.  Killian talked to Caitlin until she was blue in the face about
how healed Kaie came to be, and how Kaie most likely didn't blame Caitlin for anything, but Caitlin
couldn't buy it.  She was supposed to protect the little hellion, even from herself.
'If she had only stayed in the village, as I told her to.'  Caitlin battered herself again with this line of
thought.  'Damn it all, I should have taken her with me, and hidden her in the forest until we knew who the
hurt people were that Killian needed to treat.  That way she wouldn't of had a chance to go off
wandering.  I won't believe she went out to kill her aunt, Serrah.  She is too honorable for that, and she
gave me her word before I wailed the tar out of her that night.  No, she just didn't think Serrah's goons
would come so close to the dwelling.'
Caitlin leaned forward and popped her head back sharply, slamming it into the tree.  'Damn,’ she thought.
'Why in Hades wasn't I remembering just who this kid was.  She will NEVER stay put if you tell her to.
Harlot's Hooves, I want to tan her hide so bad for being so reckless, but she hates me now, and I can't
ever be her Mentor again.'
Caitlin's heart sank.  'I failed her beyond redemption.  How could she ever let me be her teacher again?  I
couldn't keep her from harm, right under my nose.  What a pathetic waste of a warrior I turned out to be.'
The trader wanted to beat herself senseless, or better yet, let Kaie do it, but she knew that wasn't going
to happen.  She also knew she wasn't ever going to let Kaie out of her sight again, even if it killed her, as
it was right now, knowing the young, old thief needed her guidance now more than ever, and Caitlin let her
down so badly, she'd become useless to the lass.
She was a mess, she knew, and she was shutting Killian totally out in her shame.  But Caitlin couldn't help
it.  Sometimes being the strong, knowing, tough ass one, was a pretty lousy burden.  Caitlin glanced at
the sky.  She came as close to asking for help in that moment than ever in her life.  She hoped it would do
for the powers that be.
Dreams Calling, Part 4, by Kaie
Kaie watched closely while Fujika and Flame circled the small exercise paddock at a trot.  She could feel
Caitlin's stare on the back of her head while she worked with both mares.
"So my warrior thought I was cranky over staying here?  More of you humans should learn how to
understand our talk.  It would make it much easier for us to communicate with our humans."
She smiled at Fujika, amused at how the horses called them "their" humans the way we often claim animals
as ours.   "Well you have to admit you weren't sure whether you were staying or not, and besides she
couldn't know you had a sore muscle.  It looks like a few days rest have helped though, you're looking
much better."
Leaning on the fence she pondered what to do about the problem with Caitlin.  She knew the Warrior
blamed her for what happened in those woods and thought she broke her word to go after her Aunt.
Actually she'd just wandered on the path close to the dwelling thinking Serrah's men were far away.  She
never thought they would be so close, and of course now she regretted not staying put like Caitlin told
her.  And then there were the rapes.  She was well healed since returning from the blessed waters, but she
knew that Caitlin must think of her as damaged goods now after so many men had taken her.
Every time she turned around she saw Caitlin watching her, looking as if she'd like to thrash her good.
No matter what Kaie said or what stunt she pulled in the last few weeks though, Caitlin held back.  Kaie
was sure now that she no longer wanted to mentor  her.  She missed their nightly patrols and the
knowledge that Caitlin patiently passed on to her, she and Killy were the first to ever take the time and
teach her anything in her young life.
"You know you could just go talk to her about it."  Flame gave her a meaningful look as she halted her
exercise and stood waiting impatiently for Kaie to brush her down after a good stretch around the
paddock.
As she ran the brush across the sleek black coat and brought it to a dazzling shine she muttered, "If it
were THAT easy I would have done it already."  She ran appraising fingers over Flame's stomach,
knowing that they had some time before their secrets would be revealed.
"You young horsewoman never do anything the easy way and you know it" Kiera snorted as she made this
observation and Kaie ducked the stinging tail just in time from Caitlin's mount.  The others joined Flame
in a round of amused neighs as kaie's cheeks burned a bright red with the truth behind that statement.
She resolved to confront the Trader ready or not within the next few days; right after she answered the
calling dreams.
